What Type of Dental Implants Are There?

A dental implant is a fabricated replica of your missing teeth/tooth in the form of crowns or bridges that are placed into your gums and held in place by your jaw.

There are primarily two types of implants, and all implants are classified under these two categories.

An endosteal implant, also known as an in-bone implant, is the most commonly used dental implant. It is relatively common to avail these implants over conventional removable dentures. The implant consists of three parts. The dental implant may be made of one or multiple teeth held together that are surgically placed into your jawbone.

Subperiosteal implants, or on-the-bone implants, are placed on top of your jaw using a metal framework that acts as the base to hold the prosthesis in position.

These implants are suggested for patients who either do not qualify for endosteal implants or cannot support the use of conventional dentures.

What Qualifies You as a Candidate for The Procedure?

You may want to get dental implants if your dentures are a source of discomfort and pain or bring challenges to your speech.

Before you start considering a dental implant, you will need to get assessed for it. In your initial consultation, you will be examined to see if you have healthy gums, adequate bone density, and enough bone to accommodate the dental implant.

If your gum health is poor, you cannot get implants fitted, but this does not immediately mean you are disqualified as a potential candidate. However, you will be required to first receive periodontal treatment to restore your gums.

In case of failure to meet the latter two conditions, you cannot sustain an implant and will require a bone graft procedure. If there is not enough bone high on your upper jaw, you may require a sinus lift procedure as all dental implants are at least 10 millimeters in size.

Lastly, it is critical that you do not smoke or consume alcohol excessively. Patients who smoke have shown a higher risk of infection post-procedure and a higher risk of implant failure.

It is in our best intentions to help you increase your chances of success with dental implants.
