Dental Implants have changed tooth restoration; we can now help you have a permanent, stable tooth replacement through a minimally invasive procedure. The insertion and use of dental implants are increasingly becoming more commonplace, with variations and options to suit most patients. At Rekos & Border Oral Surgery, we will review and discuss treatment specific to your needs, whether you need a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even a whole mouthful. Patients who have treatment performed by an oral surgeon can be confident in work being performed, surgical and post-surgical dental treatment is our specialty.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant posts that is surgically inserted into the jawbone to recreate the root of a missing tooth. This is different than other tooth restoration methods because an implant does not rely on neighboring teeth for support, nor does it require clasps to be held in place. Once the bone has healed, the patient has a fully stable structure, just like their natural teeth. With a stable post, we can then place a single tooth or use it in conjunction with other devices. The options are broad.
Single Tooth Replacement and Multiple Tooth Replacement
Single tooth replacement with a dental implant is done with the application of a dental crown that is placed over the implant. Besides single tooth replacement, we can also replace multiple teeth. Patients may have a dental bridge placed, using either one implanted post and one natural tooth, or with two implanted posts. Patients can use an implanted post to help stabilize a partial denture, they may require multiple posts. Patients can even have an entire arch of false teeth stabilized with four to six dental implants, such as the All-on-4 Procedure. There are many options in tooth replacement with the addition of dental implants.
Variations of Dental Implants
With so many different types of dental implants, we can find the right implant for your need:
•
Metal Free Dental Implant: Standard dental implants are made using titanium. Titanium is used in surgical bone repair throughout the human skeleton; this is because it is lightweight, biocompatible and very strong. Most patients will find that titanium is a great option. Some patients have sensitivities to metals, for these patients we offer a zirconium implant option. Zirconia is considered metal free, though it does contain metal properties, patients with metal allergies find zirconia to be much more biologically compatible.
•
Mini Implants: Mini implants are ideal for patients who require an even less invasive procedure. Standard dental implants measure between 3.4 to 5.8 mm wide, where mini implants are 1.8 to 3.3 mm in diameter and 10 to 15 mm long. For many patients, mini implants can be placed in just one visit using local anesthesia and without any sutures.
•
Removable Overdenture: Patients with dentures can choose to have their denture device permanently placed with Implants or choose to have their denture be able to snap on and off using a removable overdenture. Being able to place and remove your denture may be ideal for patients who are more medically sensitive or would find it beneficial to remove their denture for cleaning.
