What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium or zirconium appliance that we can install directly into your jawbone to fill the gap of a missing tooth, acting as a tooth’s root. There are a variety of benefits that can give an implant the ability to be a better option than a removable bridge or denture may be. The process, though, is time-consuming, and that may be its biggest downfall.
What is the process?
When you are going in for your dental implant after being diagnosed and deemed a candidate by one of our experienced dentists, one of the first things that you will experience is the dentist finding out whether or not your bone density is sufficient to retain an implant. If you have had a missing tooth for a long time, have had gum disease in the past, or are simply genetically predisposed, you may find yourself with the thin or diminished bone under your gum line.
If our dentists aren't sure that you would be able to handle an implant with your current bone density, they may advise you to undergo a bone grafting procedure in which they can replenish the bone there. This adds some time to your procedure. When it comes to the day of your implant being installed, you can rest easy that you are in great hands. Our dentist will simply open up your gums with a small incision (under anesthetic so you are completely pain-free) and will install the device directly into the bone.
Then, after it is healed and fused with the bone completely, your dentist can install a crown, bridge, or denture system to the implants. Implants are versatile and can be used for many appliances above the gum line, but are also healthier alternatives to removable pieces like dentures. The implant consistently stimulates your gums as you chew, much like the natural root of your tooth. It is also much more comfortable and stable than a removable piece that may slide or shift.
Drs. Scheetz & Rekos: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of Ohio knows that you want the very best and most natural looking replacements for your teeth, and implants are likely your best bet. Bear in mind that not every patient is a good candidate for this procedure, so give us a call today and set up an appointment to find out if implants are a good bet for you.
