What is oral pathology?
Oral pathology is an umbrella term that covers the diseases that occur in the mouth or jaw, and the structures within or adjacent to. For example, if you had a disease in your TMJ (or temporomandibular joint) or muscles in your face, the disease would still fall under oral pathology. With everything that goes into and comes out of your mouth, it tends to be prone to many different diseases, and if not properly cared for can cause much damage all over your body.

There are a wide variety of defects and diseases that fall under this umbrella term. These diseases can also be categorized by the area of the mouth or face they target. For example, there are some that affect almost solely your jaw, such as agnathia or facial hemiatrophy. There are also some that target your lips and your palate. These can include lip pits, double lip, cleft lip/palate, and cheilitis flandularsis among many others.
Your gums, tongue, salivary glands, teeth, and other tissues can be targeted as well. If our dentist were to ever find a tumor on your tongue, cheek, or lip, this could also fall under this category. Cancer is a disease that is often not checked for by our patients, but we check for it at each of your check-up examinations, so it is essential that you come to each and every one! Nerve, skin, bone and muscular diseases that can affect your whole body can also be considered oral pathological problems if they affect your face or its construction. At that point, while we help with the face section of the issue, you are likely seeing a regular doctor simultaneously to help treat the rest of your body.
Deciding a course of action to take to treat an oral pathological disease is a very individual process. Not every person has the same disease and not every person requires the same treatment as someone else who did have the same disease. When it comes to some infections, an antibiotic may be enough to wipe out the bad bacteria and to rid our patients of pain and discomfort.
In other circumstances, the problems are simply caused by poor oral hygiene, in which case we can prescribe mouthwash with diluted hydrogen peroxide to provide a deeper clean. In severe cases or cases of disease-induced or genetic disfigurement or advanced stages of a disease, surgery may be required.
