Oral Surgery Drs. Scheetz & Rekos: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of Ohio OH 43017If you have oral surgery, chances are, once the surgery is done, you will have some residual bleeding. For some, this lasts an hour or two. For others, this can last a day or more.

It is important you follow the instructions we gave you after the procedure to help keep the bleeding and swelling to a minimum. Here are a few things you can do to help control the bleeding that happens naturally after any type of oral surgery procedure.

Keeping the Bleeding Down

The first thing you need to do to control the bleeding is to make sure you follow those instructions. We tell you how soon to remove the gauze, what activities to avoid, and that you need to rest.

All of these are important. Next, you need to make sure when you rest, you stay somewhat upright. This means propping yourself up against some pillows to rest. You want to keep your mouth above your heart to keep the bleeding down.

You should avoid things like drinking out of any type of straw, plus smoking, as the suction created in your mouth can quickly dislodge any clot your mouth was able to make. If you dislodge the clot, bleeding will happen, and dry socket could, too, if you had an extraction.

You also want to make sure you keep up with oral hygiene. Keeping your mouth healthy following the procedure is going to help keep bleeding from happening days after the procedure. Again, follow those instructions.
