Is a Root Canal Painful?

Root Canals Drs. Scheetz & Rekos: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of Ohio OH 43017A root canal is a procedure that is done to remove the pulp and other parts of the inside of the tooth that a cavity has found its way into. Most people think that a root canal is painful, but the fact of the matter is, it's not.

Once a dentist or an oral surgeon explains the procedure, most people immediately associate pain with it. However, the pain comes from the infection within the tooth, not the actual procedure, thanks to numbing agents.

Root Canals and The Pain Associated With Them

Now, if you decide that you wanted to avoid using any time of numbing agent or pain reliever for the root canal, you would be in pain. However, we believe that by numbing the area and keeping you as comfortable as possible, the easier and more successful the root canal will be. Antibiotics can help reduce the level of pain you might experience.

This is why we typically prescribe them prior to the root canal. This helps to fight the infection, reducing its ability to cause discomfort and pain, thus making it easier to numb the area. The better we can numb the area, the less likely you are to feel anything. Again, this is the infection causing the pain, not the root canal itself.

A lot of people are under the impression that when you have a root canal you are saving the tooth. This is one of the shades of grey that many dentists don't address. We're not saving your tooth in the sense that it will return to normal or regenerate itself or something like that. What we are doing is removing the infected pulp, or "heart" of your tooth, cleaning out the cavity that is left behind, and then filling it.

The pulp is center of your tooth and houses all of the nerves. When the pulp begins infected, you experience varying levels of pain.

Depending on how much of the pulp is infected and to what extent, it is possible to feel some discomfort. If this happens, let us know, and we will do whatever we can to help make you feel more comfortable.
